Tamil Nadu's state-quota PG medical seats are filled by the Selection Committee under the Directorate of Medical Education (DME). The state runs its counselling separately from the All-India MCC round, and it has some of the most distinctive rules in the country — a large in-service quota and Tamil Nadu's own reservation structure.
This guide explains who conducts TN counselling, which seats it covers, the nativity and eligibility that decide a state seat, what the portal asks for, and how the process runs.
Who conducts this counselling
The Selection Committee of the Directorate of Medical Education, Tamil Nadu, conducts PG medical and dental admissions for the state quota. It publishes the prospectus, runs the online counselling and declares allotments.
A defining feature of Tamil Nadu is the split between service and non-service candidates: a substantial share of state PG seats is set aside for in-service government doctors, with the rest filled on open state merit. The All India Quota portion of TN's government seats is handled separately by MCC.
What seats it fills
- State-quota PG seats in Tamil Nadu government medical colleges.
- The in-service quota reserved for serving government medical officers.
- The government/state-quota share of seats in self-financing and deemed colleges under the state's arrangement.
Who is eligible
A qualifying NEET PG rank is required, and a state seat additionally depends on Tamil Nadu nativity/eligibility — typically MBBS studied in Tamil Nadu and/or nativity as defined in the prospectus. In-service candidates are considered under the service quota with their own weightage and rules.
Because the service/non-service split and Tamil Nadu's reservation are unusually structured, reading the year's prospectus carefully matters more here than in most states.

The process, step by step
Register on the Selection Committee portal
Register with your NEET PG details when TN counselling opens. Your community, nativity and service status are captured here, and they determine which seats you are eligible for.
Certificate verification
Tamil Nadu places weight on document/certificate verification for nativity, community and, for service candidates, service credentials — get these exactly right, as they define your eligibility and merit position.
Merit list, fee and choice filling
The Committee publishes the merit list for the relevant pool. Pay the fee, then fill and lock your choices in order of genuine preference.
Seat allotment across rounds
Allotment runs against state merit within your pool and your locked choices. Tamil Nadu runs the process in rounds, with the usual tightening of exit rules as rounds progress.

Common questions
What is the in-service quota in Tamil Nadu?
Tamil Nadu reserves a large share of its state PG seats for serving government doctors (in-service candidates), often with service weightage. If you are not in government service you compete for the non-service seats. The exact share and weightage are set in the prospectus each year.
Do I need Tamil Nadu nativity for a state seat?
A state seat generally depends on Tamil Nadu nativity/eligibility, usually established through where you studied MBBS and/or nativity documents. The definitions are in the year's prospectus, so confirm your category before counting on a state seat.
Is TN counselling separate from MCC?
